About this spot
Kandooma Thila is a submerged pinnacle in South Malé Atoll that earns its reputation through relentless current — strong flows are the norm here, not the exception, and they're precisely what draws pelagic life to the site. Divers work depths between 15 and 30 metres, with visibility regularly hitting 30 metres when conditions align. January through April are the months to plan around, when currents are most predictable and water temperatures sit between 27 and 30°C. The marine life reflects the exposed, high-energy environment. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the thila's edges, great barracuda hang in loose aggregations mid-water, and honeycomb morays occupy the crevices and overhangs along the pinnacle's flanks. This is not a site for drift-and-relax diving — strong surges demand solid buoyancy control and the ability to read current direction quickly. Advanced certification is the minimum, and prior experience on exposed thilas is a genuine advantage before dropping in here.
