About this spot

Batu Bolong is a single seamount rising from deep water between Komodo and Sumbawa, and the geometry of the site is the point: strong currents converge on the pinnacle from multiple directions, compressing nutrients upward and concentrating fish life in densities that are rare even in this region. Divers work the shallower crown at 5–10 m when current is manageable, then drop to 30 m along the walls where the flow is most intense. Visibility averages 25 m, though surge and upwellings can shift conditions quickly. Water temperature ranges 24–29 °C depending on season and current direction. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the upper structure routinely, and great barracuda hold station in the current mid-water. Hawksbill turtles graze the coral-encrusted walls, and honeycomb morays occupy crevices throughout the pinnacle. The site demands solid buoyancy control and comfort in strong, variable current — drift diving experience is essential. April through October offers the most reliable conditions, with the dry season months of July and August typically bringing the strongest currents and best visibility.

Preguntas frecuentes

Currents?

Strong — divemaster chooses the sheltered side based on tide. Drift dives only when conditions allow.

Manta odds?

Mantas are at nearby Karang Makassar, not Batu Bolong specifically. Many operators combine the two.
