About this spot

South Ari Atoll is the only designated whale shark marine park in the Maldives, making it the most reliable place in the country to encounter these animals. Resident whale sharks feed in the shallow waters here throughout the year, with sightings reported in every month — an unusual consistency driven by the atoll's nutrient-rich conditions. Dives stay within 10 metres, so bottom time is generous and air consumption is rarely a concern. Currents run mild, visibility holds around 20 metres, and water temperature sits between 27 and 30 °C, meaning a 3 mm wetsuit is comfortable for most divers. The shallow depth and forgiving conditions make this accessible to beginners, though anyone entering the water should be comfortable swimming alongside large animals and following guide instructions on approach distance. Snorkellers also work this site effectively given the depth. There is no single standout season to plan around — the whale sharks are present year-round. That said, confirming recent sighting frequency with a local operator before booking is always worthwhile.

  • Good video - well done… 0:41 is actually a silvertip shark, which is a much rarer sighting than a whitetip shark👌🏼 And kuda rah thila is one of my favourite dive sites - looks like you had a great trip. Congratulations

  • How many people are there with you and your daughters on this diving adventure, than just the one guy we see you all with on the boat? Also, which divers are you and your daughters? Pretty beautiful from some of the scuba diving on your backs. It would be interesting to see the Whale Shark with Remoras. Looks hurt on it's tail, by it looking as if it has scratches.
