About OpenWaterAtlas
An honest, geo-aware atlas for divers, freedivers, kitesurfers and surfers — built and maintained by a solo founder out of Portugal.
Mission
Most diving and kitesurfing sites are walled gardens or single-discipline directories. OpenWaterAtlas is the first cross-discipline atlas: every spot is scored honestly against the activity, the season, and the traveller's home country — never against an operator's advertising budget.
Editorial
OpenWaterAtlas is curated by a Lisbon-based product manager with a background in AI and travel. Spot descriptions are drafted with LLM assistance against verified data sources (iNaturalist, OpenStreetMap, NOAA, ERA5, GBIF, MPA Atlas, Wikidata) and edited by a human before publication.
Editorial principles
- Data sources are public and licensed for commercial use with attribution.
- No paid placements in rankings. Affiliate revenue is disclosed.
- All scoring formulas are documented on the methodology page.
- Operator listings are free and not gated by ad spend.
