About this spot

Hanifaru Bay is the planet's most famous manta ray site. During the southwest monsoon (June-November), tides funnel plankton into a small bay, drawing up to 200 mantas at once for cyclone-feeding behavior. Whale sharks join occasionally. Strictly snorkel-only — no scuba allowed in the bay itself, by Maldives regulation. The marine biosphere also limits group sizes (10 per boat, 30-minute slots). Best dives in the surrounding atoll cleaning stations.

FAQ

Why no scuba?

Government regulation since 2011 — to minimize disturbance to mantas during feeding. Snorkel works fine since action is at the surface.

Manta certainty?

Very high July-October, on days the right tide and plankton conditions converge. Operators monitor daily.

How to get there?

Stay at any Baa Atoll resort or liveaboard. Maldivian flight + speedboat from Malé.

  • Great video. Such beautiful and graceful creatures. Still to tick off on my bucket list. Well done. I loved the unedited post-snorkel snot hanging off your nose at the end. It's REAL 😉
