About this spot
Hanifaru Bay is one of the few places on earth where manta rays congregate in the dozens, sometimes hundreds, funneled into a shallow bay by seasonal plankton blooms that turn the water milky with food. The site sits within Baa Atoll's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its productivity is the draw — not dramatic topography or coral architecture, but sheer biomass and the spectacle of filter feeders working in coordinated cyclone formations just meters below the surface. Depths run only 3 to 12 meters, making this accessible to beginners, though moderate currents require some comfort in moving water. Visibility averages 15 meters but can drop significantly when plankton is densest — which is precisely when the mantas arrive in greatest numbers. Whale sharks appear regularly during the same season. June through November captures the southwest monsoon period that drives the feeding aggregations, with July and August typically producing the largest gatherings. Water temperature holds between 27 and 30°C throughout. Snorkeling is sometimes required when diver numbers are restricted by marine park regulations.
