About this spot
Each summer (mid-June to mid-September), tuna spawn off Isla Mujeres draws the world's largest known whale shark aggregation — 200-400 individuals at peak times. They feed on the surface, mouths agape, in 25-30°C clear water. Mexican regulation limits each boat to 2 snorkelers in the water at a time, with a guide. No scuba. Some lucky encounters include mantas and Pacific manta sub-species. A 2-3 hour boat ride each way from Isla Mujeres or Cancún.
