About this spot

Buracona's defining feature is a lava tunnel that opens into a flooded chamber known as the Blue Eye — a shaft of natural light penetrates from above, projecting a shifting blue disc onto the seafloor that changes with the sun's angle. The site sits off Sal's northwest coast and runs between 4 and 22 metres, making it accessible to intermediate divers comfortable with confined passages and mild current. Visibility averages 18 metres, and water temperature ranges from 21°C in the cooler months to 26°C through summer. The surrounding volcanic reef holds a reliable cast of residents. Great barracuda patrol the open water near the tunnel entrance, honeycomb morays occupy the crevices throughout the lava formations, and common octopus are regularly spotted tucked into rocky hollows. The site dives well across a long season — March through November — with the warmest, clearest conditions typically from June to October. Bring a torch for the tunnel itself; the Blue Eye effect is best observed mid-morning when sunlight hits the opening directly.

Preguntas frecuentes

Cavern or cave certification needed?

Cavern (overhead with surface light) is enough — there is always natural light visible.

Best time of day?

11am to 1pm local, on a calm day, for the full blue-light effect.

Can non-divers visit?

Yes — there's a clifftop platform where the blue eye is visible from above.

Surface conditions?

Can get rough Nov-Feb. April-September is typically calm.
