About this spot

The Lembeh Strait between Sulawesi and Lembeh Island is the world capital of muck diving. The black volcanic sand and rubble bottoms are home to extraordinary critters: mimic and blue-ringed octopus, ornate ghost pipefish, hairy frogfish, pygmy seahorses, mandarinfish, rhinopias scorpionfish, and dozens of nudibranch species. Each dive is a treasure hunt — the divemasters' eyes are legendary. Visibility is moderate (10-15m), but who needs distance when the action is on a fingernail-sized seahorse.

Preguntas frecuentes

Muck diving — what is it?

Diving sandy/silty bottoms looking for camouflaged and rare critters, instead of reefs. Photographers love it.

Best resort?

Lembeh Resort, NAD Lembeh, and Kasawari are the established specialist operations.

Wide-angle or macro?

Macro — bring 60-105mm lens. The exception is the Hairball wreck site.

  • Hi Don and Tian, to our embarrassment, we did not see this excellent video earlier (now, 13th Sept.). Indah, Linda, Adrian, and the team all say hello. Thank you for the kind words and your pleasant company here.
