About this spot
Dos Ojos is a freshwater cave system in the Yucatán Peninsula, famous for two connected sinkholes — "two eyes" — linked by an extensive network of submerged passages. With no current and visibility consistently reaching 50 metres, the water is exceptionally clear, making it one of the most visually striking cavern dives in the world. Depths run from 5 to 12 metres, keeping divers well within recreational limits while allowing extended time to explore the tunnels. The experience here is geological rather than biological — no marine life inhabits these limestone passages, but the formations more than compensate. Stalactites and stalagmites formed during ice ages when the caves were dry now hang suspended in crystal-clear freshwater, and shafts of light pierce the cavern openings to dramatic effect. Water temperature holds steady at 24–25 °C year-round, making any month a viable time to visit. Intermediate certification is required; cavern training is strongly recommended before entering the darker sections of the system.
