About this spot
Manta Sandy earns its name from the cleaning station sitting in the shallows between 8 and 22 metres, where oceanic and reef mantas regularly glide in to have parasites removed by resident cleaner wrasse. Divers position themselves low on the sandy bottom and wait — patience here is rewarded more reliably than at many other manta sites in Raja Ampat. Visibility averages 20 metres, water temperature holds between 28 and 30 °C year-round, and moderate currents keep the site active without overwhelming intermediate-level divers. Beyond the mantas, great barracuda hang in loose aggregations mid-water, and blacktip reef sharks patrol the edges of the site with regularity. The best windows for a visit run from October through April, when manta activity peaks and conditions are most consistent. January through March tends to draw the highest manta numbers. Plan your dive around incoming tide, when the current direction funnels plankton-rich water toward the cleaning station and brings the rays in close.
