About this spot

Crystal Bay sits on the north coast of Nusa Penida, one of Indonesia's premier big-animal dive destinations. The site is built on a rocky pinnacle that rises from 40 meters of open water, dropping into the blue on all sides. Strong currents are the rule here, not the exception. Divers descend fast to the deeper sections where the thermocline creates a visible boundary and water temperature drops sharply. Mola molas (ocean sunfish) are the headline draw. These massive, odd-shaped fish migrate through the area and appear most reliably during certain months, though they can show up year-round. When they appear, they're often alone or in small clusters, moving slowly in the current or holding position near the pinnacle. Beyond molas, expect large pelagics: tuna, mackerel, and sometimes sharks. The pinnacle itself hosts smaller reef dwellers in the shallower sections, but most divers focus on the deep water where the big stuff lives. This is an advanced-only dive. Conditions change fast, and the site demands solid buoyancy control, strong finning, and the ability to navigate in current. Most divers use guides familiar with the seasonal patterns. The dive is often done drift-style, following the current and ascending gradually as you move downcurrent. Plan for a safety stop in shallow water before your exit.

Preguntas frecuentes

When are mola molas most likely to appear?

Mola molas can be spotted year-round at Crystal Bay, but sightings are unpredictable. There is no guaranteed season. Your best bet is to visit with a local operator who knows current patterns and can position the dive for the best chance.

What depth and conditions should I expect?

The pinnacle drops from 10 meters down to 40 meters and beyond. Most action happens between 20–40 meters. Currents are strong and consistent. Visibility varies, and water temperature is coldest at depth due to thermocline upwelling. Advanced certification and excellent buoyancy control are required.

What marine life do you see besides mola molas?

Large pelagics including tuna, mackerel, barracuda, and sharks patrol the site. Smaller reef fish occupy the shallower pinnacle sections. Mola molas steal the show, but consistent encounters with other big animals make this a world-class pelagic dive.

Do I need permits or is there access control?

Crystal Bay is not inside a marine protected area. Access is typically via charter boats from Sanur or Nusa Dua. Operators will handle logistics. Check current local regulations and any seasonal travel advisories before booking.
