About this spot

Elbow Cave sits at North Solitary Island in New South Wales, a remote location that rewards adventurous divers with pristine underwater terrain. The site lies within the Solitary Islands Marine Park, one of Australia's premier marine protected areas, ensuring strong environmental management and thriving reef conditions. Coral health remains excellent with no bleaching stress recorded, making this a reliable choice for reef diving throughout the year. Divers at Elbow Cave encounter diverse marine life supported by the island's cold-water upwelling. Community observations document at least 12 distinct species in the area, reflecting the ecological richness of this temperate Australian site. The combination of protection and natural productivity creates consistent conditions for spotting fish, invertebrates, and other reef inhabitants across seasons. Access requires planning, as North Solitary Island is isolated and accessed only by boat from the mainland coast. Conditions vary with weather and sea state, so divers should work with local operators familiar with current tidal patterns and seasonal swell. The remote setting, healthy reefs, and year-round diving opportunity make Elbow Cave appealing for divers seeking authentic temperate Australian diving away from crowded sites.

  • I think that my fear of cave diving has actually DECREASED slightly from watching these videos because it seems like these tragedies always stem from people doing something unusual and extremely stupid. (i’m still never going to cave dive though)

  • The best things about caving, diving, and cave diving, is that you don't have to do any of those things.
