About this spot

Molasses Reef sits within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, one of the most protected coral ecosystems in U.S. waters. The reef shows strong coral health with no bleaching stress, making it a reliable destination for divers seeking vibrant reef structure and diverse marine life. The site attracts divers year-round, offering consistent conditions and easy access from the Keys. The reef supports a rich variety of fish and invertebrate species documented through 12 recorded species observations. Divers regularly encounter tropical fish, crustaceans, and other reef inhabitants in their natural habitat. The protected status means strict adherence to sanctuary rules: no collecting, no anchoring on coral, and respect for marine life. Community video documentation shows what to expect underwater, giving divers a preview before arriving. The sanctuary designation ensures the reef remains healthy and well-managed for long-term diving access. Molasses Reef is ideal for divers who want established reef diving without traveling far from the continental U.S.

Diving in Florida: Molasses Reef, French Reef, Benwood & Spiegel Grove dive sites

  • Back in 1971 I dove the Molasses and French reefs and it was my very first series of clear warm water diving I had ever done. It was quite the experience! The next time I was there was in 2001 and was SHOCKED at how much of the coral reef structure had deteriorated. This video is about what I saw then, so at least I'm glad it wasn't gotten worse.

  • Ty so much, I was able to scuba with a sea turtle in Key Largo, I was so excited to see her and all the colorful fish and corral, first time diving down there and the best dives I've ever experienced, we just got back a few days ago and I want to go back already. My video are no where near as colorful or steady as yours, some of them were but it was my first time using a go pro under water, They

  • Some of the best oceanic content on the platform. I grew up watching videos like this when we would visit the Florida Keys every summer. My brother and I would watch for hours and eat blackened fish sandwiches. Thank you for sharing.
