About this spot

Ofir sits on Portugal's northern coast within the Parque Natural do Litoral Norte, a designation that protects the area's natural character and ensures sustainable access for surfers. The spot has built a solid reputation among European wave riders seeking reliable Atlantic swells without the crowds of the Algarve. Year-round surfing conditions mean you can chase good waves in every season, though Atlantic storms create the most consistent swell in autumn and winter. The break suits different experience levels, and the protected status keeps development minimal and the shoreline relatively pristine. Access is straightforward from the nearby town of Fão, making Ofir a practical base for exploring Portugal's northern coast. The area's integration into a natural park means respect for local regulations is important—check current beach rules and any seasonal restrictions before you go. The community here is welcoming but grounded, with local surfers who know the nuances of tides, sandbars, and seasonal shifts. Several user-submitted videos document conditions across different swell directions and seasons.

  • Portugal is surfer's heaven, I agree - been there several times, ever since 1997. But on the downside, surf tourism exploded over the last 20 years, making the obvious spots (Peniche, Ericeria, Carrapateira, etc.) a pain to surf (at least during the summer time). Plus, there are parts of the Portuguese population that suffer from the gentrification that came with surf tourism in some places... (t
