About this spot

San Agustinillo sits on Mexico's Oaxaca coast, a laid-back beach town that draws surfers looking for mellow, rideable waves without the crowds. The spot breaks year-round, making it a reliable choice whether you visit in summer or winter. The beach has a sand and pebble mix, and the wave character shifts with swells, but generally holds surf in most conditions. The village itself keeps things simple. There's basic accommodation, small comedores, and a handful of local surfers who know the break inside out. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming—not a party spot, but a real surf village where people come to ride waves. Parking is straightforward, and the beach walk is short. Water conditions stay warm most of the year, and visibility varies with swell and weather. The area is outside any marine protected zone, so access is straightforward. A few community videos and species observations suggest decent marine life encounters, though the spot isn't known for dramatic mega-fauna. San Agustinillo works best if you want consistent, manageable waves in a real coastal village setting. Come self-sufficient—bring extra cash, don't rely on ATMs, and respect local surfers who've made this break what it is.

Preguntas frecuentes

When is the best time to surf San Agustinillo?

Year-round consistency is the main appeal. Swells vary seasonally, but the break holds surf most months. Summer and winter both produce rideable conditions, though swell direction and size shift throughout the year.

What kind of waves should I expect?

San Agustinillo delivers consistent, approachable waves suitable for intermediate surfers. The break varies with swell direction and tide, but generally offers shaped-up waves rather than heavy barrels or powerful tubes.

What marine life have others spotted here?

Community observations document eight species, suggesting a healthy reef and nearshore ecosystem. Exact species data isn't detailed, but the area supports typical Pacific Mexico marine fauna.

Do I need permits or special access?

San Agustinillo isn't within a marine protected area, so access is unrestricted. Mexico requires no special permit for surfing. Bring ID, respect private property, and ask locals about tide-dependent sections.

  • My bf and I just finished a trip to Puerto Escondido and Barra de la Cruz. Overall as intermediate surfers we found the localism and waves not worth it in Puerto, unless you’re advanced and willing to surf Zicatela. When it was small, the more chill spots sucked (like La Punta and Carazillilo) cause it was filled with learners getting lessons and all the teachers demanded you to get out of the bes
