About this spot

Greece's fighter plane wreck is one of the Mediterranean's most evocative dive sites. The aircraft lies submerged and accessible to divers, offering a window into WWII history combined with the natural recolonization of a man-made structure by Mediterranean marine life. The wreck has become an artificial reef, attracting fish and invertebrates that use the fuselage and wings as habitat. Divers can explore the cockpit, engine block, and tail sections, depending on their experience and bottom time. The site works year-round, making it a reliable choice for liveaboards and land-based operators planning Mediterranean itineraries. The combination of historical significance and marine biodiversity makes this wreck a unique draw for history-minded divers and wreck enthusiasts. Videos from the site show the wreck in good condition with reasonable visibility. Local operators know the site well and can brief divers on navigation, depth zones, and safe entry/exit procedures.

  • Wow! What a sight. I've read that the Corsair was called the "Ensign Eliminator" because it was so hard to fly.

  • This one was involved in a mid-air collision with an SBD-5 in 1943 while in the general vicinity of Sand Island (Midway). I dove on this wreck in 2001 and it was in much better condition than it appears to be in this video.
