About this spot

Tunnel de Planne sits within the Réserve naturelle de l'archipel de Riou, a marine protected area near Île Calseraigne in Marseille. The site draws divers to explore its namesake tunnel formation and the diverse marine habitat it creates. Year-round access means you can plan a trip whenever your schedule allows. Being inside a strict marine reserve means the site sees less pressure than many Mediterranean dives. The protected status supports healthy fish populations and stable ecosystems. The location benefits from Marseille's position on the French Riviera, with decent infrastructure for dive logistics. Species observations have been documented at 12 distinct points around the site, and community videos show what to expect underwater. This gives you a real preview before you go. The Riou archipelago is known for rocky terrain, kelp forests, and small reef structures typical of Provence diving. Divers should respect reserve rules: stay on marked routes, avoid touching bottom, and keep distance from wildlife. Local dive shops familiar with the reserve can brief you on current conditions and access procedures.

Preguntas frecuentes

When is the best time to dive Tunnel de Planne?

The site is diveable year-round. Summer (June–September) offers warmest water and longest daylight for planning dives. Winter brings cooler temperatures but clearer conditions and fewer crowds. Check with local operators for seasonal weather and sea state.

What depth and difficulty should I expect?

Specific depth data isn't published, but the site sits in Marseille's shallow-to-moderate Mediterranean waters typical of the Riou archipelago. Community videos and species observations suggest mixed difficulty. Always confirm current conditions with local dive guides before descent.

What marine life will I see?

Twelve species observation points have been recorded at the site, indicating healthy and diverse populations. Expect typical Mediterranean fauna including grouper, wrasse, octopus, and invertebrates. The protected reserve status helps sustain these populations year-round.

Do I need permits to dive here?

Tunnel de Planne is inside the Réserve naturelle de l'archipel de Riou, so access is regulated. You must follow reserve rules and typically dive with an authorized local operator. Contact Marseille dive shops or the reserve authority before planning your trip.

  • I was 1 of 4 TBM operators on the English service tunnel. The machine we drove was a Howdens 5.4m open shield and it completed 24kms in late October 1990 when it was driven hard right off line, stripped of all serviceable components and pumped full of concrete. The short 2m x 1m tunnel used for the official breakthrough on December 1st 1990 was hand dug by my brother and myself. We were also part

They Didn't See the Turbines Until It Was Too Late

  • The best part about diving at night in murky water near a turbine intake is that you don’t have to do it.

    @boredinduluth2 · 👍 2000
  • I work at a dam and the fact that divers are allowed to dive in a reservoir whose dam doesn't have trash racks or filters to keep debris out of the turbines is WILD.

    @colleenmitchell1995 · 👍 11000
  • The "fans" don't move the water. The water, and gravity, move the fans. Otherwise a dam wouldn't generate power, it would use power.
