About this spot

The USS Kittiwake is a 150-meter Chanticleer-class submarine rescue ship that sank in 2011 off the coast of Grand Cayman. Today, it ranks among the Caribbean's most accessible large wreck dives. The wreck sits upright on the seafloor between 5 and 27 meters, making it suitable for intermediate divers with some wreck experience. The structure remains largely intact, with open holds, companionways, and deck spaces that reward exploration. The superstructure rises into shallow water, so divers can work their bottom time efficiently across multiple depth zones. Steel surfaces host soft corals, sponges, and encrusting life. Fish school through the cargo areas, and larger species patrol the perimeter. Current can pick up during seasonal swells, so check conditions before descent. The wreck lies outside the Marine Protected Area, making it a popular choice for operators running regular services. Divers should have solid buoyancy control and comfort with overhead environments before attempting deeper penetrations. Three community-produced videos document the site, offering insight into layout and marine activity. Visibility varies seasonally, so plan accordingly. The year-round warmth and proximity to Grand Cayman's dive centers make the Kittiwake an essential stop for wreck-focused Caribbean diving.

Preguntas frecuentes

When is the best time to dive USS Kittiwake?

The Kittiwake is diveable year-round from Grand Cayman. Seasonal swells can affect current and surge, so check local conditions with operators before booking. Summer tends to offer calmer seas, while winter swells may increase water movement.

What depths and difficulty should I expect?

The wreck ranges from 5 to 27 meters, making it suitable for intermediate divers. The shallow superstructure allows bottom time flexibility, but penetration into deeper holds and compartments requires wreck training and solid buoyancy control.

What marine life inhabits the wreck?

The USS Kittiwake hosts soft corals, sponges, and encrusting organisms on steel surfaces. Schools of reef fish move through cargo areas and companionways, while larger predators patrol the wreck's perimeter. The artificial reef has become established habitat since sinking.

How do I access the USS Kittiwake dive site?

The wreck lies outside Grand Cayman's Marine Protected Area and is served by multiple dive operators based on the island. Most dives are boat-based, departing from George Town or nearby dive centers. No special permits are required for recreational diving.
