About this spot

Chicken Reef sits in Indonesia's Raja Ampat region, one of the world's richest marine ecosystems. The reef draws divers seeking encounters with tropical fish and coral formations typical of this biodiverse corner of Southwest Papua. Year-round conditions mean you can plan a trip almost any time, though local water patterns shift seasonally. The reef is unprotected by a marine protected area, so conditions can vary with fishing pressure and weather. Current coral bleaching status warrants attention—check conditions with local operators before booking. Water temperature and exact depth data aren't widely documented, so contact dive operators in Raja Ampat for specifics on what to expect. Community divers have logged 12 species observations at Chicken Reef, and three community videos are available online. This modest but real documentation shows active interest from the diving public. The reef rewards explorers willing to gather current intel from operators and recent trip reports. Raja Ampat's combination of accessibility and untouched reef character makes this a worthwhile addition to any Indonesia dive itinerary.

FAQ

When is the best time to dive Chicken Reef?

Chicken Reef is diveable year-round. Raja Ampat's climate brings seasonal shifts in currents and visibility, so ask local operators about conditions during your planned travel dates. Dry season (October–April) typically offers calmer seas.

What depth and difficulty is Chicken Reef?

Exact depth data isn't widely published. Contact dive operators in Raja Ampat for current site profiles, depth ranges, and skill requirements. Community reports suggest it suits a range of experience levels.

What marine life will I see?

Is RAJA AMPAT Still Worth It in 2026? (CORAL BLEACHING)

  • I just came back from Raja Ampat, I was there previously 10 years ago. The destruction of the coral and the garbage all over made me not want to go back. I use to tell people it was one of my top dive destinations (over 300 dives) and now I tell people not to bother. You failed to mention the major garbage issue along all the islands.
