About this spot

Rainbow Reef's Great White Wall is Fiji's signature steep-wall dive. The site starts in shallow coral gardens around 18 meters, then shelves dramatically into open water beyond 35 meters. Soft corals blanket the wall in reds, yellows, and purples—hence the name. The wall faces the Somosomo Strait's current, which brings in larger fish: trevally, barracuda, and reef sharks cruise the blue. Intermediate divers should plan descents along the wall structure and stay aware of the drop-off edge. The reef holds dense coral cover in its upper section, making navigation straightforward for those comfortable with depth and current. Access is from the Taveuni side via boat. Most divers visit as part of a live-aboard itinerary or day trip from nearby resorts. The site is unprotected, so conditions vary with weather and season. Surge can be heavy during big swells. Three community videos exist of the site, giving you a preview before booking. This is a classic wall dive—vertical relief, clear water off the wall, and consistent fish action. Bring a light for the purple and red tones in the coral. Equalize early and keep buoyancy tight on the descent to avoid over-weighting yourself on the slope.

FAQ

When is the best time to dive Rainbow Reef's Great White Wall?

Fiji offers year-round diving at Rainbow Reef. Dry season (May–October) has calmer seas and steadier conditions. Wet season (November–April) can bring heavier swells and current, but also clearer water in some months. Check local forecasts before booking.

What depth and skill level do I need?

The wall ranges 18–35 meters, making it intermediate territory. You need solid buoyancy control and comfort with current. Stay above 35 meters; the wall drops deeper, and nitrogen loading increases fast. Guided dives are standard and help with navigation.

What marine life can I expect to see?

Soft corals dominate the wall in brilliant reds, yellows, and purples. Reef sharks, trevally, barracuda, and groupers are common. Smaller reef fish work the coral. Larger pelagics occasionally pass the wall edge. Macro life and nudibranchs hide in the coral branches.

How do I get there and do I need permits?

Access is by boat from Taveuni. Most dives are booked through live-aboard operators or nearby resorts offering day trips. No special permits are required for recreational diving at this site. Bring a passport for Fiji entry.
