What is the Open Water Diver certification?
PADI Open Water (OWD) is the world's most recognised entry-level scuba certification. Once certified, you can dive anywhere on the planet to a depth of 18 metres with a buddy — no instructor needed. SSI and other agencies issue an equivalent card; the experience and depth limit are the same.
The certification is for life — there is no annual renewal. Most students complete it in 3–4 days; the course mixes online theory, confined-water (pool) skills practice, and four open-water dives at progressively deeper sites.
Best months for beginners in Philippines
These are the months when local conditions are calmest — gentle current, warm water, good visibility. Outside this window dive shops still run courses, but expect more cancellations from wind or surge.
Typical cost
An Open Water course usually costs €350–€500 over 3–4 days, including manuals, gear rental, certification fee, and four boat dives. Resort destinations sit at the high end; budget destinations like the Philippines or Indonesia closer to €280. Confirm what's included before you pay — some shops bill the certification card and gear separately.
What to expect — day by day

Day 1 — Theory + first try
Most schools front-load the eLearning before you arrive. On site you cover paperwork, watch a few videos, and do your first ever pool session — breathing underwater, mask clearing, regulator recovery. No open water yet.

Day 2 — Confined water skills
Pool day, or a calm shallow bay used as a pool. You drill the same 24 skills used by every diver on the planet: buoyancy, equalisation, buddy checks, sharing air. Long day, lots of repetition. By the end you trust the gear.

Day 3 — First two open-water dives
Two boat (or shore) dives, both shallower than 12 metres. You repeat the same skills as Day 2, this time on a real reef with fish around you. The instructor stays within arm's reach.

Day 4 — Final two dives + certification
Two more dives, this time deeper — 16–18 metres. You demonstrate navigation with a compass, do a controlled emergency ascent, and that's it. The instructor signs off, the school issues a temporary card on the spot, and the plastic certification arrives in the mail a few weeks later.
